Lithium Battery Cycle Life: A World of Opportunities for Australia

Australian Energy Storage manufacturer Magellan Power and WA Lithium Miner Neometals have teamed up at the latest AMEC (Association of Mining and Exploration Companies) 2017 Conference, to display what can happen when Australian industries put their heads together and add value to our natural resources.

Magellan and Neometals displayed what could happen from strategic thinking, if WA, (which currently supplies a large proportion of the world’s Lithium) were to process the Lithium, manufacture batteries, supply Australian made energy storage, and recycle the batteries at the end of life.

Western Australia currently supplies nearly 40% of the world’s lithium and is the world’s largest supplier as an individual state/country. Neometals in particular, has commenced shipments from the Mt Marion operation near Kalgoorlie this year and is Australia’s second largest lithium supplier.

Magellan Power, located in Perth Western Australia is a leading designer and manufacturer of Energy Storage equipment for Residential, Commercial/Industrial, Utility and Remote Power applications. Managing Director of Magellan Power Masoud Abshar says we in Australia should think of ourselves as world leader's, producing high quality products and creating smart jobs for the massive battery storage industry which is growing fast. “This chain of taking the raw material from the ground, putting it in Australian made products, supporting it through its lifetime and then recycling it is big picture thinking – but if it had the correct support, it is not such a stretch of the imagination,” said Mr Abshar.

There are currently no plans in place for this yet, but the idea was well received and created energetic discussion among participants.
Neometals Stakeholder Relations Manager Simon Hicks said, “Given Western Australia is the world’s largest supplier of lithium and effectively controls the lithium raw material supply chain in a time of massive investment in battery manufacturing, overwhelming demand and limited lithium supply, we have a window of opportunity to capitalise on this situation and use it to encourage investment in advanced battery manufacturing in Western Australia."
"However, we are competing against countries where governments are providing significant support for battery manufacturers and therefore we need our government to step up and play their strategic role as well.”
