Decarbonisation a Pilbara Off-Grid Eco Retreat
- ClientRemote Eco Retreat
- DateSept 2025- Sept 2026
- LocationPilbara region, WA
Performance snapshot: September 2025–September 2026
Magellan Power’s integrated off-grid energy system is enabling a remote eco retreat in Western Australia’s Pilbara region to operate with significantly less reliance on diesel generation.
Combining on-site solar generation, battery energy storage and intelligent system controls, the solution currently supplies approximately 75% of the resort’s energy from renewable sources while maintaining the reliable power required for daily operations.
This case study provides a snapshot of the system’s performance between September 2025 and September 2026.
THE CHALLENGE:
The retreat previously relied entirely on diesel generators to meet its electricity requirements.
Its new energy system needed to support the site’s operational loads reliably while substantially reducing diesel consumption, emissions and operating costs. It also needed to perform in harsh Pilbara conditions, integrate seamlessly with the existing electrical infrastructure and support the resort’s broader sustainability objectives.
Given the site’s remote location, dependable monitoring and access to responsive regional technical support were also essential.
Solution
Magellan Power designed and delivered a fully integrated off-grid energy system following a comprehensive study of the retreat’s energy loads.
The system includes:
- 680 kWh of lithium battery storage housed within a purpose-built container
- Integrated HVAC, fire detection and fire-suppression systems
- A 175 kW ground-mounted solar array
- A modular 180 kW inverter system
- Intelligent system controls and remote monitoring
- Existing diesel generators retained as backup generation
The battery system stores excess solar energy for use when solar generation is low or unavailable. The inverter and control system continuously manage energy generation, storage and distribution, while the diesel generators provide backup when required.
Magellan Power continues to monitor the system remotely and provides ongoing field support through its regional team in Newman and Port Hedland.

PERFORMANCE FROM SEPTEMBER 2025 TO SEPTEMBER 2026:
During the reporting period, the system maintains an approximately 75% renewable energy fraction, substantially reducing the resort’s dependence on diesel generation.
Between September 2025 and September 2026, the system delivers:
- Approximately 73,440 litres in avoided diesel consumption
- Approximately 195 tonnes of avoided CO₂-e emissions
- Approximately $179,928 in fuel and operating cost savings
Remote monitoring gives Magellan Power ongoing visibility of system performance and supports timely technical assistance when required.
By integrating solar generation, high-capacity battery storage, intelligent controls and locally backed field support, the system provides reliable off-grid power while advancing the resort’s environmental and sustainable-tourism objectives.
