Magellan Power Delivers Off-Grid Energy Transition from Diesel Only to 75% Renewables
Magellan Power was engaged to transition a remote site in Western Australia, previously powered solely by diesel generators, to a cleaner and more sustainable energy system. The primary goal was to achieve a renewable energy fraction of 75%, significantly reducing diesel consumption and associated emissions. By deploying an integrated solar and containerised Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), Magellan Power successfully delivered a reliable off-grid solution tailored to the site’s unique operational and environmental challenges
Solutions
Magellan Power delivered a fully integrated, containerised off-grid energy system designed to achieve 75% renewable energy penetration, following a comprehensive site load study. The system included 680 kWh of lithium battery storage housed in a purpose-built container with HVAC, fire detection and suppression systems, and remote monitoring. A 175 kW east–west ground-mounted solar array was installed on the cleared and upgraded site. A modular 180 kW inverter system manages power conversion and distribution, while the site’s existing diesel generators were repurposed to provide reliable backup. Magellan Power managed the entire project lifecycle through its service team based in Newman and Port Hedland. From design and mobilisation to installation, commissioning, and decommissioning of outdated infrastructure, Magellan Power delivered a complete turnkey solution with full documentation.

Client Requirement
The system needed to reliably support the retreat’s operational energy demands while significantly reducing reliance on diesel generation. It had to operate efficiently in harsh environmental conditions and provide seamless integration with existing electrical infrastructure whilst meeting the site’s sustainability objectives. The project also required a full turnkey solution from design through to installation, commissioning and ongoing monitoring.
RESULTS & ONGOING FIELD SUPPORT:
Magellan Power successfully delivered the project on time, within budget, and to a high standard, ensuring reliable operation in one of Western Australia’s most remote and environmentally sensitive locations. The system now achieves a 75% renewables fraction, reducing diesel consumption by approximately 73,700 litres per year, CO₂ emissions by approximately 197 kg each year and saving approximately $185,000 annually in fuel and operating costs. Magellan Power continues to deliver fast and reliable ongoing support through local team members whenever it is needed. By targeting critical power areas and integrating renewable energy generation, high-capacity lithium storage, an intelligent control system and remote monitoring and control, the solution supports the resorts move toward energy independence, aligning with its mission of environmental responsibility and sustainable tourism in the rugged Pilbara region.
