The project involved upgrading a 2004 MCR charger for one of our mining clients. The charger had been in service for nearly two decades, and while many of its components, such as boards and electrical elements, had reached the end of their life, the enclosure and other parts were still in good condition. The client wanted an upgrade solution which could be completed on site, whilst keeping the plant online and not disrupting the operation.
Solutions
Magellan Power delivered a tailored upgrade to the client’s existing 2004 MCRI charger, incorporating a 2024 MCRII controller chassis, new batteries and an integrated battery monitoring system. This upgrade also included an emergency charger and load bank connection point, all performed on-site to minimise downtime and costs.
Client Requirement
The client required a cost-effective solution to address the aging components of their 2004 MCR charger. They wanted to avoid the extended downtime associated with replacing the entire system with new chargers. Additionally, they were interested in a solution that would minimise waste and be environmentally friendly.
Magellan Power Solution
Magellan Power proposed an upgrade to the existing MCRI charger rather than a full replacement. The upgrade included:
- Installing a 2024 MCRII controller chassis to replace the outdated components.
- Providing new batteries to ensure reliable power supply.
- Integrating a battery monitoring system to allow real-time tracking of battery health and performance.
- Adding an emergency charger and load bank connection point for enhanced system flexibility and reliability.
By performing the upgrade on-site, Magellan Power was able to significantly reduce the cost and time required compared to a complete system replacement. The existing enclosure and parts that were still functional were retained, preventing unnecessary waste and contributing to a more sustainable solution.
This upgrade not only provided the client with a cost-effective and timely solution but also aligned with their environmental goals by reducing landfill waste.
