Magellan Power Delivers Custom Bi-directional UPS Upgrade for Client
A client’s on-site power systems had reached their end-of-life and required either a refurbishment or upgrade. They elected for an upgrade and engaged Magellan to deliver a safe, cost-effective uninterruptible power supply (UPS) solution that would improve safety, sustainability and ease of future maintenance.
Solutions
Magellan Power delivered a compact, industrial-grade 6.5kVA Bi-Directional UPS specifically designed to meet the site’s spatial and operational constraints. The solution featured a 48Vdc battery bank for safer Extra Low Voltage (ELV) operation and a compact design to fit within a tight 500mm cabinet depth. Converting the battery system from 110Vdc to 48Vdc ensured compliance with ELV standards, significantly enhancing on-site safety for personnel. An integrated manual bypass switch enabled online maintenance capability, while an Anderson plug allowed for fast and safe battery disconnection on site. By retrofitting into existing enclosures, the project achieved low site costs and minimised disruption. This Australian-designed and manufactured system, built for over 25 years of service life, incorporated a sustainable retrofit approach that reused existing infrastructure.
Client Requirement
The client needed to upgrade their aging UPS infrastructure, which had reached the end of its service life. The new system had to fit within the tight spatial constraints of existing cabinets and improve onsite safety for personnel. Minimising installation costs and complexity was essential, as was enabling maintenance activities without requiring power interruptions or extended downtime.
RESULTS
The upgrade provided a cost-effective, sustainable extension of system life while avoiding full enclosure replacement, reducing waste and environmental impact. Enhanced design and communication features improved performance and reliability immediately. The manual bypass switch enables online maintenance, minimising downtime.
